Breezy and the Rowmark girls hit the USST Center of Excellence

They say that you must endure the pain to see the success. My theory is that success can be pain. Last week on Sunday at 9:30am 9 Rowmark girls loaded the slowest, grossest bus known to man (or at least the Rowmark Ski Academy) and headed up Parley’s pass to get to The Center of Excellence.

Originally we weren’t going to go up that day because we were scheduled to go to Loveland Colorado for a four-day camp. But snow at Loveland was not on our side and so we did physical testing instead.

If any of you have ever done physical testing (which most of you should have) you will know that with each test you are pushed to your limits and then further. Beep Test (or shuttle run), run until you die. Box jump, Jump back and fourth over a box until you are incapable of jumping the height of the box and so you trip over it over, and over again. You get the idea.

The unfortunate thing is that I already did physical testing earlier this fall. Though I increased my scores in almost everything even though we were at altitude it was not the most fun experience of my life. Next time I will take camp!

Dryland this fall has been pretty great. We have been doing some new stuff because we have a new dryland assistant coach, Pat Purcel, who is just getting all of his ideas out. Slack lining, lateral squats, circle dodge ball and lots of other things have been added on to our normal weight lifting, running and jumping trend. I am exited for our upcoming Camp in Loveland in November and am hoping to see some of you there!

Testing out in the great Northwest....

Hey guys! This past Sunday was the USSA Physical Assessment, and we all know how much we love that. There are multiple areas of strength that are tested. One of the tests is the "Pacer" which is running between two given points, increasing speed after each level. You run until you die. The other tests include a very unfair (in my opinion) abdominal strength test, vertical jump, and the horrifying Box Jump. In the Box Jump, you start on top of a roughly 20in high box and jump off the box to the left, landing on the ground. You then jump back onto the box and jump off to the right. You repeat this action for 60 seconds and try to get as many hits on top of the box as you can. This test results in death as well. Well, now that I've explained everything, here were my results!

Ab Strength- Level 4 (There are seven levels, my disproportionate body is at a disadvantage with this test)

Pacer- Level 13

Vertical Jump- 28.5in

Box Jump- 73 (Despite tripping over the box in the beginning of the test!)

I was pretty satisfied with my results and I seem to improve every year. How did you racers do? Goodbye for now!

First SRD shirt in Panama?

Hey everyone! Hope you all have had an amazing summer! The subject of this blog may not be on the same page as skiing, or not even the same book, but it was still awesome!

My family and I traveled to Panama for about two weeks to visit a few of my aunts (Mom's side, born in Guatemala) and cousins. We stayed just outside of skyscraper-filled Panama City in a very nice home. While down there we went to a baptism for my new cousin (only three months old), went snorkeling in the Caribbean, visited the Panama Canal, bought some cheap Nike products at an insanely large mall, and messed around in the rain forest.

The definite highlight of the trip was when we stayed at Playa Blanca on the Pacific. It's an all-inclusive resort with huge pools, food and drinks on demand, pool-bars, and awesome music. Not only does this resort border the largest ocean in the world, it also has the largest pool in all of Latin America as well.

The best part was swimming on top of the huge waves in the ocean with my dad. Well that's my trip for ya! Now back to the prison of boredom known as "school" which begins on the 8th for me. See ya later!

Avril Racing with the Kiwi's In New Zealand

This summer I spent about a month and half training and racing in New Zealand with Treble Cone Race Academy located in Wanaka, New Zealand. The weather was great and the training was awesome. I did several races which were all tech. The races were all local so I didn’t have to travel more than forty-five minutes to get to one of the mountains. I raced at Treble Cone, Cardrona and Coronet Peak. It was a lot of fun racing the New Zealand nationals because a lot of the national teams showed up and brought great points, so we had minimum penalty for a few races. It was high intensity racing against world cup racers that have sub six points!

I didn’t finish many races but the race practice was beneficial. After leaving New Zealand. I returned home to Salt Lake City for two weeks. After which I left for Houston, TX to stay for two weeks, to go on little vacation in the sun, which was a fun change of pace.

I am really pumped for a great season racing for SRD!

Getting Ready For The Season Differently

.)) Andreas Calabrese at the Teva Games

Recently I read a little thing on how the Kostelic family used to train for the season so I thought that I would also (in addition to a normal weight program) do an un-traditional program of running through the woods with logs and jogging a mile in knee high water.

Part 1. Bike Racing
This summer I decided to get back into bike racing. I used to race as a little kid but had to give it up. This summer I started racing mountain and road bikes and loved it. My first few races didn't start to well and usually ended in crashes and broken bikes. I started to figure out the whole idea of this bike racing thing about 10 races in when I scored a 5th place at the 25th annual Davos hill climb. Next was the 12th place at the Louisville Criterium finals. The season then picked up with more top ten finishes. By the end of the season I had gotten everything I wanted to do except one thing, win a series final. But at the last ocean coast road race final in San Diego I had good legs and got the victory I had been looking for. However now the bike season is over and I hope to carry over into the ski season strong and ready to get some great results. Stay tuned for more of my training adventures coming shortly.
