I was getting so pumped for school to start but when Hurricane Irene hit Vermont, everything changed. We were suppose to have a very nice school orientation with barbecues and such, but it all had to be cancelled due to the heavy winds and rain.
Our school and campus is on a hill so flooding didn't affect us much at all, but the surrounding towns in valleys and the bottom of mountains were completely washed away.
As a school, we participated in community service near our mountain in Jamaica, Vermont. I have never helped out at a natural disaster community before and I was anxious to see how bad these people were affected. We got there and in the first minute of entering the town, a fully constructed bridge had broken in half. Then we got onto a dirt road and noticed something strange. If you looked out of the car window, you could see draining pipes at eye level and a house right above it.
The river had overflowed so much that it took away houses and land. It was incredible how much these people lost and how lucky we were to not get hit by the flood. Historic bridges were destroyed, house floors were covered with mud and water. Some people wont be able to get power in their house for months. I hope that the people and community everywhere that got hit by Irene recover soon.
