Long-time friend and fellow Vail skier Gail Slatter-Folwell and Vail Resorts hosted a public unveiling and dedication of ‘The Edge,’ a two-times life-size bronze sculpture of a downhill skier that honors and pays tribute to winter Olympians, World Champions and skiers who have lived, skied, trained, and raced in Vail over the past 50+ years.
Vail Resorts commissioned Boulder CO -based, award-winning Sculptor Gail Slatter-Folwell in late 2007 to create a one of a kind statue that would serve as the centerpiece for the new Mountain Plaza in Vail Village, part of Vail’s renaissance.
Chief Operating Officer of Vail Mountain Chris Jarnot said that Folwell’s stunning treatment of a downhill skier was chosen as a fitting tribute to Vail’s ski history as well as to winter Olympians and World Champions. The commissioned piece took more than seven months to build and weighs more than 3,000 pounds!
