It has been a busy few weeks with some great finishes and some challenging moments which involved serious amounts of hiking. I had my first podium finish of the year – 3rd in my GS race at Stratton. It felt so good to bring what I had been working so hard on in practice into the race! Then I was off to the ERS races at Whiteface, New York. It was so amazing to ski on an Olympic hill! It was very steep and just a sheet of ice. I was a bit tentative during the GS race and it was really hard to keep my weight forward like I have been working on in practice because it was so steep and icy. As a result my times were not as fast as I had hoped. The slalom race the next day was crazy. Over half the field DNFed. I actually fell twice, hiked twice and then straddled a gate on my first run (for a DQ) and then fell, hiked and then blew out of the course on my second run. Not one of my best days. Needless to say, I didn't do as well as I had hoped, but it was great experience for me to go to my first ERS races and Lake Placid was really cool.
This past weekend our Southern Vermont Council race was postponed because there was not enough snow to put up the fencing. Fortunately, I qualified for the Mid-Vermont SG at Okemo (my home mountain) so I still got to race this weekend. I came in a solid 6th place (SG not being my best event!). It is always fun to be back at Okemo to see my friends and old coaches. Just to mix things up, I borrowed my brother’s SRD Black Ice GS suit (yes he is 11 and it fit me – amazing how they stretch J) and I have to say that it is an awesome suit!
Between all of my races still training almost every day and trying to keep up with my school work. Here is a link to one of my training videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYd6YrQtQqs . I’m thinking I might be better off without poles!
I have 2 races this coming weekend – GS on Sunday and a SG on Monday….CAN’T WAIT!!!
Good luck to all of you, have fun and ski fast!
