DU Wins 19th NCAA Ski Title

|| Make that 19 times!

This weekend I head down to Denver for my 25th year class reunion at the University of Denver. Today DU won its 19th Ski NCAA Championship! Go Pioneers!

Denver storms back to win 19th NCAA championship

BOZEMAN, Mont. — It came down to a duel. And the University of Denver drew fastest. On the strength of their men’s alpine team — a squad DU head coach Andy LeRoy thought was weakened by injury — the Pioneers pulled ahead of the University of Colorado in the final minutes of NCAAs, giving them a record 19th title.

The DU alpine men put 106 points on the scoreboard, which combined with the Pioneer women’s 75, was enough to pull them ahead of CU, which received 97 from its alpine women but just 39 from its two qualfiers on the men's side. The Pioneers ended the meet with 649.5 points to easily outdistance the Buffaloes at 619. Utah (550), defending champ Dartmouth (546) and Middlebury (529) rounded out the top five.

To the surprise of no one, CU’s Lucie Zikova — Thursday's GS winner — pulled ahead second run and won the women’s slalom in 1:27.09. Joining Zikova atop the podium in the men's slalom was Thursday's men's GS champion, John Buchar of Denver.

The Morse Report. Pt 1

People and coaches always talk about your first year as a J2 being really difficult. In some ways it is, but mostly it’s just a whole lot of fun. Finally I have been able race against top Eastern kids every weekend. Early on I was able to climb out of the 990 hole and now I have decent points! I recently went to Park City for NDS races and had a blast. Ski team members like Steve Nyman and Erik Scholpy were there, and I really learned a lot just by watching them. Right now I’m at Aspen for J2 Nationals and am having a great time. Hopefully I can ski wicked fast this week and bring home some hardware. SRD rocks!
